Balayage is a French word meaning "to sweep." In this hair color technique, highlights are applied to random sections of hair by hand. The dye or lightener is usually painted on, starting midshaft and becoming denser as it moves down the section of hair to the ends. Because it is swept onto the surface of the hair, it produces an effect that is more natural than that of regular highlights.
Contrary to popular belief, balayage is not a look in itself. It is a technique for adding highlights without foil like traditional highlights. It is often compared to the natural effect of an ombre style.
A full balayage can be applied to all of your hair to achieve the lighter look all-around without having to worry about maintaining inevitable root growth as you would with other lightening methods.
Balayage highlights are usually just a few shades lighter than your base color, giving your locks natural depth and dimension. Partial balayage can also be done, such as only around the face or only on the top of the head. Using the right products and techniques, balayage blends seamlessly into your natural color.
